The Truth about Olympic lifting!
Olympic style lifts have been used with elite sports people for many years however there are many benefits to be had by incorporating these lifts into people from all walks of life and those with different training goals.
Whether your goals are strength, hypertrophy or fat loss the Advanced Strength Training lifts have so much potential to assist in achieving your training goals.Leading Strength coach Nick Tumminello agrees, stating in a recent article
“Everyone, in my view, can benefit from doing some form of explosive power training. You don’t have to do that with Olympic lifts, but you can. The goal is to teach your body to transfer force from the ground to your fingertips, and to do that effectively and efficiently”.
I am still amazed how few personal trainers actually use a good bend leg deadlift from the floor which in my eyes is such an amazing exercise. I use this exercise and it’s variations for improved athletic performance and
rehabilitation of back injuries. So why do many people not use these types of lifts in their training??1.Trainers do not know how to properly sequence the exercises and the progressions and regressions of the Advanced lifts.
2.Safety, many trainers believe they are unsafe. We teach trainers the “five pre-requisites” of Advanced Strength Training, if your client can not achieve the five pre-requisites they have some remedial work to do
before attempting the lifts.
3.Never been exposed to the lifts in their own training, I always say at our courses, you don’t have to be able to front squat 200kg, but you do need to be able to do a squat with the bar to be able to demonstrate the lift. There are so many ways to develop strength, speed and power. Olympic style lifting is one proven way to do this. Used correctly in a comprehensive strength program that includes rotational and unilateral strength development you will be well on your way to athletic or functional success.

Revenge of the nerds version of fitness!

In the past couple of years I been fortunate enough to work with some great athletes and coaches, some of the best in the world. Pictured above left is cricketing great Michael Bevan (coach), Andrew Nealon (physio) and myself with the inaugural ICL 20/20 Championship trophy we won as part of the all conquering Chennai Superstars. Also former Australian Boxing Champ, Paul “the Hurricane” Briggs whom I assisted over a number of years with his strength and conditioning, Paul will be featuring in the Australian version of the Contender later this year.
However last Wednesday I was starting to think where my career was actually heading as I spent the day playing video games.
Two of the modern greats of the gaming world, Jung and Bajo (pictured below) from the ABC TV show Good Game. These boys really did surprised me, I think they could be some of the best athlete’s I have ever seen!
I have never seen so many fast twitch muscle fiber’s in one athlete in my who career, unfortunately for these two boys all their athletic ability was stored in their thumbs!
I was asked to help them road test and critique the current range of fitness games such as Wii Fit and EAS sports. Was a very funny day, and I think the boys were happy to go back to dungeons and dragons by the end of the day!

The segment is scheduled for broadcast on Good Game at the following times:
Monday 17th August 8:30pm ABC2
Friday 21st August ABC1
The show can also be seen at www.abc.net.au/goodgame
